Why I Attend Conferences In My Field (And You Should Too)

“Not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment. As you become more clear about who you really are, you’ll be better able to decide what is best for you the first time around.” – Oprah Winfrey

I just got back from a conference that was held in The Palomar Hotel in Washington, DC. The name of the conference was “The Blogging School” taught by Rosetta Thurman. Rosetta has a very successful blog herself called Happy Black Woman. The conference was attended by women who already had a business and wanted to start blogging for more exposure or women who want to start a business and felt that blogging would be a great vehicle to get their vision out into the world. It wasn’t all business all of the time though. You have to have some fun and let go. There was dancing, (Rosetta loves to dance) good food, plenty of picture taking and lots of networking. I learned so much at this conference. I’ve had blogs in the past that were not very successful and since attending this conference, I can now see why they weren’t successful. You need someone to lead you in the right direction and give you the correct tools to be successful. That’s why it pays to attend conferences. We all need someone to mentor us and teach us the things that we don’t know. That’s why attending a conference in your field is so important. It saves you from making mistakes and leads you in the right direction so you can be informed and put the correct tools to work. You should always be seeking knowledge in your field whatever your field is.

The guest speakers that Rosetta had were outstanding. My ink pen was moving at the speed of light just trying to keep up with all of the information that was being given out.

I learned about how to set up Facebook ads, how to monetize your blog, what pages you should have on your blog, and how often and when you should be blogging. The most important 2 things that I learned was clarity and strategy. You must be clear on what you are trying to accomplish and you must have a plan to get yourself there. Just like if you want to quit your job you must be clear on how you are going to do it and you must have a strategy to get out of your job.

Even though we have a Facebook group page, there’s nothing like seeing and meeting people face to face to make a connection in person. I attend at least 2 conferences a year. How many conferences a year do you attend? What do you get out of attending conferences? Leave a comment below in the comment box and let me know.
